A few years ago, I was exactly where you might be right now: busy every single day, but never feeling like I was actually getting anywhere. My mind would wander off the to-do list, and — as if by magic — I'd find myself deep down a YouTube rabbit hole while the important work sat untouched.
I've been chasing a fix for this since middle school — all the way back to the Palm Pilot days. What finally changed everything wasn't an app, a hack, or waking up at 4am. It was one simple commitment:
Every night, without fail, I create a structured plan for the next day.
No more lying in bed awake, running tomorrow's responsibilities on a loop. My tasks are laid out before I wake up, so I start every morning crystal-clear and laser-focused — executing instead of deciding.
Why a journal?
Psychologists call those racing nighttime thoughts “open loops” — your brain rehearsing unfinished tasks because it doesn't trust they're handled. When you train your brain to trust your journal as the place your goals and to-do lists live, the loops quiet down. You sleep better, think clearer, and act faster.
